While we are almost entering our third year of a global pandemic, it is safe to say that working from home, socializing and entertainment are done primarily through our devices. The question is: How has COVID-19 really effected our smartphone usage?
Human interaction is a basic need to ensure sanity for human beings. At the end of the day, all living things require some type of social interaction. Dating back to 2020, face to face exchanges were virtually non-existent and resulted in individuals depending on their devices to keep busy. Those who were living alone or those not in direct contact with loved ones were presumably feeling a sense of loneliness. This sensation has the ability to leave people feeling hopeless, isolated and unmotivated. In order to compensate for these unfortunate emotions, social media applications, movies, television shows and communication applications such as FaceTime and WhatsApp have been used for entertainment and fulfillment. Oftentimes, this increased usage can lead to phone addiction which is still currently prevalent within our society and without a doubt effecting our younger generations.

In recent years, there have been more open conversations regarding mental health and its significance. With the emergence of the pandemic, it is undeniable that countless individuals struggled in this realm. Studies have shown that with prolonged screen times, human beings are more likely to experience psychological issues, low emotional stability and a greater risk of anxiety and depression. Additionally, when digital use is impulsive, compulsive unregulated or addictive, the negative repercussions are apparent and inevitable.

With increased usage and popularity of social media applications, brands are most definitely benefitting and their platforms are evolving. TikTok for instance, is a social media platform that has skyrocketed in regards to popularity, especially over 2020. Many users started to create content to pass the time during quarantine, while other users also started using this platform for entertainment purposes. This is beneficial to TikTok as the increased usage is creating brand awareness. One of the ways they are able to make revenue despite the fact that this is a free app is considering the fact that they offer paid advertisements for brands to promote their services and products. A few other options that generate revenue include in-app purchases, brand takeover advertisements, in-feed video advertisements and branded effects.

There is no doubt that the average person’s screen time had increased due to COVID-19. This pandemic has been new territory for the entire population and has required major adjustments. Now that we have recently entered 2022, working from home, face masks and social distancing are all practices that have been incorporated into our daily routines.
